I own 5 acres but only have to mow about 2-2.5. 1.5 acres is on a pretty steep slope. I really don't need a loader or bushog, etc.
I purchased a John Deere L130 thinking thats all I needed, but found out that while it would cut flat area just fine, it could not handle the sloped area. It would would go down the hill but not up.
I don't want more tractor than I need, but stepping up to a 4WD seems to be the best option. Its a huge jump in price to get a Kubota 4WD BX1500 or John Deere X585. Any recommendations? Is there someting in between?

You need a zero turn mower. www.wrightmfg.com look at the wright stander and sentar. I have two standers and one sentar. They will cut a 45 degree angle, with no problem. About the same as a BX1500. ....

I have read about these on the forum here. Would a stander go up steep slopes? Seems like a 4WD Ventrac or Stiener might be better? ....

Not to be rude, but what part of 45 degree angle didn't you get. You couldn't even touch that with a 4x4 tractor. The sentar weight is so low to the ground, it hugs hills. A tractor do to its high center of gravity is very unstable on hills, even in 4x4. I cut grass for a living (along with going to college). I specialize in mowing steep hills. No other machine(except a Huster 6x6 hillsider) can touch 45 degrees and not scare the operator. ....

45 degree angle. Thats great! In fact, I had to leave part of the hill for my Shindaiwa Grass Trimmer because I was afraid to mow it with the John Deere.
Luckily, I was able to return the John Deere to Home Depot. I had only used it once to mow the lot once (4.7 hours).
If the Wright will do that kind of slope, I may not need the trimmer at all... I'll start searching for a nearby dealer.
In your opinion, would the same apply to the Ventrac 3000. It seems to have a bit lower center of gravity, etc. ....

Different lawn mowers all work hills differently, some have more weight on the rear so they have better traction. Some have to much weight on the rear and would wheelie when given the right circumstances. I definitly would demo one before you buy. ....

Just be prepare to spend $7,674.00 for a 48" 19hp kawi to $8,974.00 for the 61" 25hp kawi (this is what i have). If cost is a problem. The 52" 17 kawi (what my standers are) is about $ 6,734.00 to the 61" 25 kawi for $ 7,754.00. I would recommend the 52" stander over the 48", The price is not much of a difference. But the overlap is better since you can run tire to tire track and not miss anything. THe 61" is a little big for hills, since its not a floating deck. The sentar is good with the 52" or 61" deck. ....
